Refrigerators
32 in the range, in five configurations: French door (22), counter-depth (13), top-freezer (3), bottom-freezer (2) and compact (3).
Counter-depth means the box sits roughly flush with your cabinets — it looks built in and holds noticeably less than a standard-depth unit of the same width. Decide which of those two matters more before you shop on capacity. Check the door swing and whether the hinge reverses, and measure the depth with the door open, not just closed.
Dishwashers
14 in the range, of which 14 are built-in. Two numbers decide it: place settings, which is capacity, and the dBA rating, which is how loud it is. Under about 45 dBA you will not hear it from the next room; above 50 you will. Built-in units need a water supply, a drain and a power connection in the cabinet space.
Ranges and cooktops
8 in the range, including 8 slide-in models. Slide-in sits between cabinets with the controls at the front and the edges overlapping the counter; freestanding has a back panel and can stand alone. They are not interchangeable in a fitted kitchen.
Gas needs a gas line and a licensed installer. Induction needs a circuit that can carry it and pans a magnet will stick to. Neither is a job to improvise — see Installation.
Mowers
Three kinds, and the deciding factor is the size of the ground:
- Walk-behind (7) — small to medium lawns. 4 are self-propelled, which is worth having on any slope.
- Riding mowers and tractors (8) — larger ground, and easier on the back.
- Zero-turn (2) — fastest around obstacles, least good on steep slopes.
Cutting width sets how many passes the lawn takes; a wider deck needs more room to turn.
Battery or petrol
16 machines are cordless and 11 are petrol. Battery starts instantly, runs quietly and needs no fuel, oil or winter servicing, and is limited by runtime — check the amp-hour rating and whether a battery is even included. Petrol runs as long as you keep filling it and is still the answer for large ground and heavy cutting, at the cost of noise, fumes and maintenance.
Batteries are usually shared across a manufacturer's range, so a second machine from the same brand is often cheaper without one.
Chain saws
6 in the range. Bar length should exceed the diameter of what you are cutting, and a longer bar is not a free upgrade — it is heavier and harder to control. Chain saws cause serious injuries; read the manual, wear the protective equipment the manufacturer specifies, and if you have not used one before, do not learn on a big one.
Before you order anything
- Measure the space and the route in.
- Check the supply — outlet, circuit, gas or water.
- Check what is in the box; accessories and batteries are often separate.
- Read the warranty terms. Covered by the manufacturer's warranty, and commercial use commonly voids it.
